El Chow Chow es una raza de perro originaria del norte de China, donde se los conoce como Songshi-Quan, que significa «perro león inflado», por su característica apariencia.
Se tienen registros de la existencia de estos perros desde hace más de 2000 años. Descripciones de perros de guerra de apariencia similar figuran en leyendas chinas desde tiempos inmemoriales. Esto hace del Chow Chow una de las razas más antiguas conocidas: en comparación, la mayoría de las razas de perro modernas tienen su origen en el siglo XIX.
Estos perros se caracterizan por su denso pelaje, el cual es particularmente espeso en la zona del cuello. Esto genera una especie de melena que recuerda a la de un león, especialmente en los individuos de color marrón. Esta melena es tan alta que casi oculta sus orejas, que son pequeñas y triangulares. Otro distintivo de la raza es su lengua, que a diferencia de la mayoría de los perros, presenta un color negro-azulado. Por último, su cola también posee una apariencia característica: muy peluda y siempre llevada sobre el lomo.
En cuanto a su temperamento, no suelen ser muy expresivos. De hecho, es común compararlos con los gatos en este sentido. Son naturalmente silenciosos y poco traviesos, aunque bastante tercos y poco afines al entrenamiento. Sin embargo, el Chow Chow es protector y fiel a su familia, independiente, y algo tímido. Puede ser desconfiado con extraños.
Cuidados con el Chow Chow
- El Chow Chow necesita un nivel de actividad moderado, pero regular. Por ejemplo, paseos en la mañana o en la tarde; preferiblemente evitando el sol fuerte, sobre todo en verano.
- Debido a su denso pelaje, esta raza tiene una gran tolerancia al frío, pero por otro lado sufre en un clima caliente y húmedo. El Chow Chow necesita estar en un ambiente fresco en los días de calor, si es posible con ventiladores, o aire acondicionado.
- Deben ser desparasitados cada seis meses.
- Mensualmente, se debe aplicar productos para el control de pulgas y garrapatas.
- El piso donde circule el Chow Chow debe ser áspero, nunca liso o resbaladizo, pues podrán aparecer problemas en las articulaciones; también se pueden agravar lo problemas de displasia de cadera (descaderamiento) si son incipientes.
- Se recomiendan baños cada 45 días y se deberá secar el pelo totalmente luego de los mismos, evitando así posibles problemas de piel.
- El Chow Chow tipo liso necesita ser cepillado una vez por semana. En cambio el Chow Chow de pelo más áspero necesita ser cepillado cada dos días, o diariamente cuando esté cambiando el pelaje.
Alimentación
Siendo una raza susceptible a los problemas de la piel, es mejor utilizar una ración Súper Premium. Una alimentación de excelente calidad mantendrá la piel sana y el pelaje abundante y saludable. Las raciones Súper Premium como Equilíbrio® contienen las cantidades adecuadas de nutrientes para una alimentación balanceada en un volumen pequeño. Por ello, a pesar de que la dosis indicada parezca pequeña, no se recomienda ni utilizar mayor cantidad, ni agregar otros alimentos a la dieta.
